SEPA EPA Proposes Removing DuPage County Landfil/Blackwell Forest Preserve Site from Superfund List Warrenville, Illinois Public Comments Accepted July 8 through August 7, 2020 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposes that the DuPage County Landfill/Blackwell Forest Preserve Superfund Site be deleted from the federal National Priorities List, or NPL. The NPL is a roster of contaminated areas that are eligible for cleanup under EPA's Superfund program. The Site is a former 40- acre landfill located in the Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville. The Blackwell Forest Preserve is an open space containing woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and lakes used by the public for recreation. EPA is interested in your opinion regarding this proposal. The deletion will be effective September 8, 2020, unless EPA receives comments against the deletion by August 7, 2020. EPA will reconsider its proposal in light of any comments received. Background The Site is being addressed through federal, state and potentially responsible party actions. Response actions included landfill cap repairs, as necessary, enhancing surface draining, putting in a leachate treatment system, disposing of the landfill leachate, installing additional landfill gas vents and monitoring groundwater. EPA has conducted several five-year reviews of the site's remedy. These reviews ensure that the remedies put in place protect public health and the environment, and function as intended by site decision documents. The most recent review concluded that response actions at the site are in accordance with the remedy selected by EPA and that the remedy continues to be protective of human health and the environment. On April 13, 2020, EPA issued a Final Close Out Report for the site. Illinois EPA concurs with the proposal that the Site be deleted from the Superfund list. How to make comments EPA invites you to comment on its proposal to delete the DuPage County/ Blackwell Forest Preserve Superfund site from the Superfund list.
