SEPA EPA Begins Review of Wauconda Sand & Gravel Superfund Site Wauconda, Illinois U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Wauconda Sand & Gravel site, a closed landfill, on Garland Road near Bonner Road in Wauconda, Illinois. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up with waste remaining on-site to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site. EPA's cleanup of the landfill and related groundwater that contained volatile organic compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBS, and heavy metals, consisted of installing a contaminated liquid collection and monitoring system. EPA's efforts also include installing a fence around the site to prevent access, upgrading the landfill cap and monitoring-well network, hooking up homes to the municipal water system, and establishing Institutional controls. More information is available at the site information repository located at the Wauconda Area Public Library's Reference Desk, 801 N. Main St., Wauconda, IL, 60084, and at www.epa.gov/superfund/wauconda-sand-gravel. This review should be completed this August. The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
