How Often Does Your Furnace Run? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Now that we are in the heating season, various furnace related issues always arise. One of the most common problems that we encounter is that the furnace cycles too often. It will run for a short time, shut off and several minutes later it will start again. There are several factors that can cause this type of problem. A dirty filter is one of the most common reasons for short cycling. If the airflow into the furnace is restricted, the unit will overheat and shut down. Once it is cooled down it will start again and the whole process repeats itself. This type of operation is very destructive to the heat exchanger and it also limits the home from being heated evenly. Other contributing factors to short cycling are: Furnace is oversized if it cycles more than 4 or 5 times per hour. Inadequate ductwork, that could be either supply or return ducts. Bad thermostat. Possible over amping of inducer or blower motor. Once again, regular preventative maintenance will prevent the vast majority of breakdowns.
