"Ask Adam Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. Are You Always Cold In The Winter? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling There are many people that we service that always seem to be cold during the winter months. Obviously, when it reaches -10 or -15° F it is almost impossible to stay comfortable while being outside. Our challenge is in dealing with "feeling cold" while being in a heated space. That could be your home, car or place of employment. Our bodies maintain a temperature of 98.6° F. The average room temperature is usually between 68-70° F. Warm air (heat) always travels to cooler air, there- fore, our bodies are losing heat at a constant rate of 28-30° F even though we are in a conditioned space. This is why there are thermostat wars in our homes and offices. There are 4 ways that our bodies lose heat: Conduction - Transfer of heat via direct contact with a colder object, like standing barefoot on a ceramic tile floor. Convection - Natural air currents form around our bodies which causes our body heat to dissipate upwards. Radiation - The loss of body heat to a colder object without heating up the area in between, like sitting next to a window. Evaporation - Moisture via perspiration is a constant occurrence but it is typically thought about in the summer when we sweat. There are many ways to improve indoor comfort but one of the most effective is to install a whole house humidifier. With proper humidity your body minimizes the effect of evaporation and you will feel like it is 2° F warmer.
