"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. White Powder From Heating Ducts? Adam Kem, Owner Official Heating & Cooling During the heating season we usually receive several calls regarding white powdery residue on furniture or wood floors. Typically, this can occur under several conditions: Remodeling Work Any time there is drywall work there will be white dust almost everywhere. You should shut down the furnace whenever the drywall is sanded. After remodeling you should have the ductwork cleaned. Portable Ultrasonic and Impeller Humidifiers - These units dis- charge a vapor or mist into the air. As this mist lands on furniture or wood floors it eventually dries, the dried mineral deposits are what you see as white dust. Duct Mounted Humidifiers - These are the best and least proble- matic humidifiers. However they do require proper maintenance to avoid any issues. Any time you have water there are potential ser- vice calls. At the end of the heating season these units should be thoroughly cleaned. The pad is very porous and when not in use the sediment and mineral deposits literally turn into a white powder. Depending on where the humidifier is mounted on the ductwork, the furnace blower can distribute this powder throughout your house. Regular maintenance will eliminate this problem.
