"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. What Is A Blower Door Test? Adam Kem, Owner Official Heating & Cooling As the name implies, a blower door is a motor in a frame that is usually placed in the front door of a house. When it is turned on, it sucks the air out of the house (negatíve pressure) and this allows the outside air (with higher pressure) to infiltrate the home. All of the areas that show signs of infiltration are sources of energy loss within the structure. These entry points can be documented and the homeowners can then decide how many of these problem areas they want to resolve. This technology has been around for over 30 years. With the change in building codes, this type of testing is now mandated in all new residential home construction. In Illinis all new homes are required to have a blower door test to verify the air tightness of a home. Any duct work that is in an unconditioned space (like the attic) has to have a duct blower test. This simply insures that the duct system is not leaking any air beyond the set guidelines. For new construction, these tests are mandated, but for existing homes this type of testing can be used to increase comfort and reduce utility bils. Most solutions for building infiltration consist of insulation, caulking and weatherproofing. The only proven solution for sealing duct leakage is to use Areoseal. We are an authorized dealer for this product and our average job is 95% effective at reducing duct leaks. The Aeroseal equipment gives us a computer printout of the air loss before and after the sealing.
