Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years, He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. How Are Air Conditioners Rated? Adam Ken, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Almost everything we buy today has some kind of energy rating. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) is the acronym for the HVAC industry in rating the efficiency of air conditioners. This is analogous to miles per gallon for the auto- motive industry. Years ago the required SEER rating was 8, then it went to 10 and now it is 13 for our geographic area. In the south and western states 14 is the minimum rating. The highest rating is 20 plus. The higher the efficiency, the less energy is used. Typically, if you have a 10 seer and install a 16 SEER your savings would be 60%. To maximize the SEER rating you should also install a furnace with an ECM motor (variable speed). Without the ECM motor the efficiency of any particular A/C unit will drop. All testing is verified by the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). The most efficient equipment is always paired with an ECM blower in order to achieve those high numbers. If you are contemplating an upgrade with your HVAC equipment please cal us and we can show you typical savings and payback on the different types of equipment/ efficiency.
