The goal of these mandates is to conserve more energy but the net result is to have a safer and more com- fortable home. For residential applications, the following items are the most applicable: Blower Door Test - This is a test that checks the airtightness of a building. With proper insulation, windows, etc., the infiltration factor is reduced which results in a more energy efficient home. Duct Blaster - This test is required only if the furnace or ductwork are located in an unconditioned space, like an attic. The ductwork has to meet code guide- lines before being approved. A house must pass these two tests prior to getting an occupancy permit. There are many other code upgrades that new homes must adhere to but these two tests are specific to the HVAC industry. Obviously, many of the code changes are not practical or cost effective for existing homes. Two things that most existing homes can benefit from are proper sealing of your attic and your duct system.
