It was quite astonishing how fast new software and applications made it from limited use of a few to mainstream of the population. Facebook, from being a college students fun application became a colossal business attracting advertisers and millions of users around the world. Facebook was followed up by many other social media platforms, all initially with a purpose of 'socializing' and 'friends communication, while the background activities were becoming more and more hostile and untruthful in content. We all looked at it, but hardly predicted consequences of allowing this kind of technology to grow wild, with no oversight, no rules of engagement, and no accountability. Soon, we had millions of users, often outside of the country, manipulating the content, spreading misinformation and even harassing other users. Our government did not get involved until it was too late. Too late and too little as we never really had a regulatory body with technological abilities to identify misleading algorithms, bullying platforms, threats, and similar. Today, we blame, and righteously, social media for depression and anxiety epidemics in the younger generation. We have never seen a similar level of hate spread publicly. We also never had businesses use any kind of advertising applications as much as Facebook has been used. Why? It is the simplest way to reach masses and influence them. Not all'influencers' play fair games. We have never had so much fraud, fake news, misleading statements, personal attacks and more. And we know why and how it happened. We know our government should have reacted more and earlier to set up strict rules protecting society, especially the young population. We are repeating the same error with Al. Seven companies lead the stock market. They compete with each other to come up with more and faster to overflow the real-life business with applications that 'will save a ton of money! Nobody is checking the quality of the services they offer. Nobody is Doma verifying the consequences of using their programs. Do you think they care? No, they actually fight back even for the simplest attempt to regulate the industry. And most of our senior government officials do not even comprehend the extensive level of damage that Al can cause. Yes, if used properly as a tool to improve services or products, like Da Vinci robots, Al But with no oversight and regulations, can be beneficial and game changing. left to the developers who are money hungry, I can only wonder what consequences we will deal with a year or two from now. It has been used to create fake documentaries, showing real current or historical people at various events. The program can literarily change history. You may not realize that what you trust as a document is a fictional production of a smart (or evil) user who decided to influence others. I guess we have not learned our lessons.
