Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology What about this tiring humidity? This summer seems to be more difficult to bear, mostly due to almost daily high humidity. Our windows show fog and water from outside and plants outside are wet every morning. We also have a hard time catching fresh air, because it seems we have none. So, what is happening? We definitely deal with climate changes, not yet fully described except that we have more vapor in the atmosphere. Warmer air carries more vapor and causes some significant changes in the environment and on human bodies. As warmer atmosphere contains more vapor, we experience sudden and very intense rainfalls. This is why you see no rain in the evening news and later, in the early morning hours, we experience very heavy rain. Our soil is unable to absorb all the water as fast as it falls and rather than that, we see flooding. Streams and rivers get swollen from the excess rainfall while some grounds are still dry. Our bodies are not better with a quick adjustment. First of all, we are unable to regulate our temperature correctly. We sweat and our skin barrier is gone, allowing temperature to take over. Altogether with that, we experience more allergic reactions due to mold and dust mites, respiratory problems, and cardiac strain. Some people feel more joint pain and stiffness and just general discomfort. Our skin may have several symptoms too. Sebaceous glands in the skin produce more sebum, an oily substance that produces overall very oily skin. It clogs our pores making it more difficult for skin to 'breathe. This, in sequence, produces a great environment for microbes and fungi. And what is very frustrating is the fact that we can wash our skin and dry it with a towel, and 15 minutes later, through sweating, we feel wet again. Acne sufferers get especially frustrated when daily routines do not work. ma This time humid weather is particularly cumbersome for people with inflammatory skin conditions. Anybody with eczema or psoriasis, or skin allergies will tell you how they can get easily irritated and infected with microbes at various times. One day, you treat psoriasis and two days later, you treat fungus. This is why various skin barriers are highly recommended. Even such a simple solution as wearing cotton clothing or cotton sheets, especially in the areas of skin rubbing during mobility. Armpits, groins, under breast folds should be washed and dried more frequently and protected with soft, natural clothing. Treating fungus with psoriasis during humidity can be a real challenge and sometimes can lead to unnecessary use of steroid, just to make the treatment faster. It is much easier to prevent the problem. Thus, during the summer like now, it is crucial for us to do all possible prevention even if we do not see high humidity in the weather forecast. It will not hurt us to do so, and it will not catch us off guard either.
