Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology Branding and Community Arlington Dermatology is one of very few independent community medical practices in dermatology. Most of others joined large hospital groups or were bought out by private equity financial companies. The difference in operations between an independent clinic and a private equity clinic could not be more drastic. You can feel it just by walking into the waiting room. Private and independent practice must rely on its patients and their satisfaction. Thus, it will serve the needs of patients, needs that are clearly identified and followed upon. The quality of service by all staff members must be impeccable: our patients are truly our lifeline. No patients-no clinic. Many of our patients have been attending our clinic for many years and there are generations that visit us: from grandparents, to parents, to children. We recognize most of them by their first name, remember their medical problems, and care to hear their family stories. Being grounded in the community for many years, we understand the community needs, opinions, and problems. Can we satisfy everyone? We would like to do so. But, as a small business, we have limits, and we are not shy about discussing them. However, we do not even attempt to save money on medical supplies that are of a higher quality or attractive snacks in the waiting room. We are here to serve not only with an accurate medical diagnosis and treatment, but with the entire combination of services needed to run an effective medical practice. Our nurses are well trained and educated and so are other clinicians. We offer alternative treatments through very well- established research departments, with a large range of options in clinical studies. Our employees are happy. They are safe, comfortable, and smiling, extending that attitude towards patients. They help each other and award 'stars' to each other for an extra step taken. We provide them with great benefits and decent pay to make sure they do not worry at work about how to manage their homes. We support families and care about their pets. In a large private equity group clinic, all these personal touches disappear. It is just about business and profit. If the profits are not to the high managers' liking, cuts are put in place, limiting personnel, time of visits, or any other items considered non-essential. Hardly ever is anybody picking up the phone. Patients become numbers. It seems like many industries are heading that way, but in the medical field, it is just impossible to handle. We would not like being just numbers. So, we do not treat others like numbers. It is not always easy to run a medical practice, maintaining personal touches and conveniences. But that is the only way we want to be seen. This is why we are unique and different. Come and visit and tell us what else we can improve to make you happy.
