Business Insight Ethics at work and elsewhere Not too many people talk about ethics in the workplace. We have various rules and laws issued by different levels of authorities. We follow state laws about harassment and minimum wages, we train in office safety, but what about just normal ethics? Have we forgotten the common sense of following the rules of human proper behavior? Recently, I read an article or rather opinion of a columnist for Wall Street Journal about how people are generally unhappy at work. They just do not like going to work and simply working. Many comments to that article listed toxic workplace environment, dishonest corporations, long commute, and more. There were, however, several comments that made more sense to me. Any workplace is made of people. There is no toxic environment caused by desks, chairs, or scanners. Any type of negative influence is caused by employees, their superiors, and their managers. All of them are humans. Shouldn't there be some code of ethics posted at the entrance to every workplace? And I am not thinking about religious statements but rather 'human code of ethics: We know these from proverbs and social sayings, but we just do not use them. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Do not cheat (not just your spouse but, for instance, time). Work to the best of your abilities and skills. Be honest. Help each other. Work together. Do not judge. Be kind. Respect others' inability to agree with you and learn how to deal with it. presented by Arlington Dermatology Disagreements at the workplace are normal, but they do not need to cause a conflict. The same way, disagreements at home do not have to result in divorce. We can disagree and still have get the job done. It all depends on how we approach resolution and conversation. The bottom line is that, like at home, at any workplace, we are hired and paid for doing tasks and have outcomes that are positive for the workplace. Like a production line result give us tangible items we purchase for use, office environment creates intangible products and services. None of us can do it in a solitary room at home. We need to work in groups, having various tasks assigned to us. Pretending that computers can do it all and that tele-meetings are alike meetings in a room does not benefit us. The dynamics are different. Human interactions are different. As so are the results. We all know that staying home during the recent pandemic did a lot of damage to children and young adults. I do not think older adults were any different. They also experienced a lot of stress and anxiety, and they certainly disassociated themselves from their workplaces. Going back to the physical space of the office became a burden. I do understand some cases. But, in general, workplace and togetherness of working in a group is more beneficial to the clear goal of every company. There are many jobs that cannot do teleworking and they are just fine. People are unhappy in a workplace because of other people and not because should consider making attempts to allow of their rooms and desks. Employers people for more 'human' interactions at work so that they re-gain or learn how to work together.
