Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology Medical Service or Business? Or both? I think the best answer is both. As a community practice, independent from any large groups or hospitals and based in the community, we definitely feel more like a medical service. As a matter of fact, the majority of our staff are completely unaware of concepts of profit or loss. We have a really hard time assessing the cost of medical supplies when we order them and often, we just do not. We order based on the quality of products and simply on what works better for patients and our clinicians. This is a very important factor to know because there are so many places you can buy, for instance, sutures used in our skin cancer surgeries, but not all of them work to the full satisfaction of our doctors and benefit all our patients. Does this mean we are poor in business? Luckily, this is not what it means. There are some factors that allow us to stay in business and deliver quality at the same time. First of all, we are blessed to have a professional staff in clinical settings and in administration who are long-term employees. They really understand our role in the community, they have excellent skills in what they do, and they really care about our practice. This has been their second home for 10-15-20 years. Yes, some of our employees have worked for Arlington Dermatology for that long. Secondly, they continue improving their skills and are very well oriented in newer trends, concepts, and methods. They know how to balance the quality of service with effectiveness and desired outcomes. Third, they research. Not a single task has one and only one answer. There are always options and we all learned how to select these options that benefit our patients and that became our priority. And we discuss and research further, making sure that it stays within our limits financially. Our practice has a very particular culture of work style. Everybody knows when and how to wash the dishes in the lunchroom, everybody knows how to clean and sterilize the exam rooms, and there are no topics off limits. The door to all management is open daily, so the employees do not need to wait for meetings. Further, employees are encouraged to bring suggestions, and messages about anything and everything so that no problem stays open for long. Early intervention is not just medical advice. And finally, our patients base. They may have contributed to our well- being as business more than anybody. They trust us, they comment on our performance, they enjoy coming back, and they tell others about us. Again, lucky us, we have stayed in the community for a very long time, and we pride ourselves in being a family- oriented community practice. We accept all insurances, and we discount self-paying patients to Medicare schedule fee level. The uninsured are the last group of people we would like to take money from. We use modern and efficient technology to make our own life easier but also to reach out to all patients in the most convenient manner. In general, we proclaim that excellent service brings patients with no advertising. It has always worked for us. And advertising funds go to offer snacks for our patients. Patients like it a lot.
