Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology New Projects For The Patients Last year, I had written some columns about immune system and inflammation. Medical science is such a wild field that we learn new things almost every day. A year may mean a huge difference in how we treat some diseases and how we link some of them to each other. My patients already know that psoriasis (not only) is a kind of inflammation coming from a deficient immune system that these days. can be corrected with medication. Often it means staying on medication for many years, perhaps forever. It turns out that many psoriasis patients suffer from several other diseases, most of them associated with inflammation as well. Psoriatic arthritis. is one of them. We often find diabetes and hypertension to be associated with each other and frequent in psoriasis patients. too. And finally, many diabetes patients suffer from chronic obesity and psoriasis patients experienced it too. Can you see where I am heading? Yes, inflammation and dysfunction of various parts of our immune system are connected with each other and targeting all of them at once and with one drug is impossible. However, there is a probable connection that can be associated with improvement of one of the problems if we actually treat the other problem. We do not know if and how it is true, but research shows that many patients get better with multiple medical problems if we can normalize just one or two of the diseases caused by various inflammation. Our practice is lucky to have Dr. Chris Rivard added to the daily operations. Trained in both, general medicine, and dermatology, he is a board-certified family practitioner dealing with diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol issues, and many more. He is also able to address these particular connections that sometimes prevent patients from improving their skin conditions because the reason of these conditions is much deeper and more extensive than just skin. Dr. Rivard and Dr. Bukhalo will be offering general medicine clinical studies in diabetes and obesity, and all of you, if qualified by medical standards, will be able to participate in them. This is a very new and exciting opportunity for many patients who cannot pay high prices of diabetic medication, want to lose weight, and simply get healthier. We live in times when getting to see a primary doctor may be difficult, especially when you need that visit and advice quickly. PCPs and other general medicine doctors are busy with COVID-19, seasonal infections, and often, patients must wait days and weeks to see them. Not at our practice. We conduct our operations in such a way that, whether you need a skin advice or blood pressure advice, we will get you in in a matter of hours or short days. We know that it is important to see a doctor when you need it and not when the schedule opens several weeks from now. Long wait time cause additional anxiety, which may make your medical problem worse. We, Dr. Bukhalo and Dr. Rivard, have known each other and worked together for many years. We have an interesting story about how we got to practice medicine together now. And how both of us are so much interested in clinical research, which brings novelty and improvement to currently approved treatments. We always look for opportunities for patients to be a part of that process and encourage you to call or come to discuss if you can be a part of it too.
