Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology What can be done to help others? We live in the times of reigning social media and misinformation. 90% of people do not read the news, do not listen to the news, and depend mostly on opinions about the news. Opinions are very different from facts. Facts are real and objective, opinions are subjective and depend on the source's viewpoints. Relying on opinions is not safe. It may mislead our thoughts and decisions. It may also be untrue. There are opinions that psoriasis can be caused by eating a lot of pizza. Or spicy meals. There are patients who changed their diets and claim to be cured of the disease. There are also people who believe that JFK Jr. will come back to save America and become the President. I could go on and give you thousands of examples of opinions, some very strong, that simply do not make sense, but people believe them. Pizza does not cause psoriasis. Our bodies are much more complex than a straight line from one food to a disease. Similarly, medical science is much more complex. And with time passing, it changes, bringing many new discoveries and inventions. The majority of those have to do with our genetic build-up. And again, it is not a straight line from mom and dad. They are fed with hormones and antibiotics to promote unnatural growth and elimination of bacteria, while staying in conditions that are deplorable. We then eat those hormones and antibiotics for our whole life and become resistant to many. Of course, our genes and body organs are influenced by what we eat in general, so, if they are based on unhealthy animals, how can we be healthy? I know it is easier said than done, but we must start using our common sense in accepting what is real news and what is opinion. What is possibly unhealthy and what can be tolerated just fine. We can also influence our lawmakers to act upon abuse of healthy environment that includes farms, water, and air. In the meantime, we can also learn more about our options to prevent and treat diseases in the least harmful way. FDA has a rule of verification of the safety and efficacy of new drugs, but also making sure that those new drugs are not inferior to what we already have on the market. We can work together learning from real sources how and what we can do to make sure that the new drugs are approved only when they meet superiority criteria. Please, talk to us if you have more questions about these crucial problems. We are in all of it together.
