Business Insight presented by Arlington Dermatology Can you trust Optimus? What is Optimus or who is it? It will be one of the humanoid robots available for purchase as soon as 2026. According to some visions of our technology leaders, humans like each of us will not work any regular jobs in the soon future. Jobs will be taken over by artificial intelligence and robots, who will control 90% of the world. Some 'visionaries' say that Optimus will be the closest friend of every person. It or he will know exactly what you like, what you want, and how you want it. Sort of like multi-functional Alexa, not only robots will answer your questions, but they will do your tasks, at home and workplace. In other words, a machine will be your friend. It will be highly sophisticated in design, but it will still be a machine. It will have no feelings, no empathy, no human touch. When it hugs you, it will be a machine touch. Perhaps they will come up with some skin-like material, but it will not be a human touch. How do you feel about it? Technological visionaries predict there will be no books or magazines. Internet will be the only platform for any reading materials. Everyone in the world will have equal access to the Internet and publishing, in accordance with the rule of free speech. People will comment on other comments and publications. There will be no rules or filters for these publications. No corrections. No facts check. How do you feel about it? The future, according to visionaries, will have no need to see doctors. We will be able to get medical advice from the Internet or from robots. The 'truth' about medicine will be determined by the majority of expert opinions loaded into the computer 'medical sites'. In other words, if several hundred opinions agree on the plan of treatment against ten doctors who do not agree with it, majority will win. This theory of the future is in quite a conflict with the past and with the history of invention: Galileo and Copernicus were in huge minority of opinions and still, they changed the path of science. What do you think about it? Being a medical researcher and investigator for many years, I have always admired technology allowing for progress in medicine and other fields of science. Certainly, our lives have improved dramatically with new inventions and discoveries. However, all these discoveries have always been a celebration of a real human brain, hard work, cooperation, and dedication to humankind. Like the recent Noble prize winners in medicine and physiology, years of studies, inquisitive minds, friendships, and determination to eliminate suffering from diseases directed real doctors to be 'real friends' of patients. I am having a very hard time believing that robots will replace them. The same way, robots will not and should not replace your family, friends, and even coworkers. If we allow for that to happen, with no control and regulations, we may gain 'friends- robots' to do the laundry for us, but will lose human social connections. We ourselves might very well become disposable items then. What do you think about that?
