K-9 Frisbee became a sport in the United States in the 1970s when Alex Stein, a student at Ohio State University, introduced his whippet pup, Ashley Whippet, to catching Frisbees. Before long he was entertaining scores of students on campus with his incredible catches. Stein decided that Ashley could become a star and after some false starts trying to get him into movies, he sneaked the dog into a Monday Night Baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds and the whippet's incredible talent entranced the crowd. Before long the duo was invited to entertain at two Los Angeles Rams halftime shows, appear on The Tonight Show and the Mery Griffin Show and participate in the human World Frisbee Championships. The Frisbee officials were so impressed that they inaugurated a canine competition in 1975 and, as they say, the rest is history. Locally, Tom Wehrli and his brother started playing Frisbee with their beagle/ terrier mix around 1979 and never stopped, winning many of the growing number of championship competitions with many dogs. Interestingly, he has found that the most talented Frisbee dogs are high energy breeds like cattle dogs and Australian shepherds and nearly three-quarters of them are rescue dogs Wehrli's wife, Chris, is also a K-9 Frisbee competitor. Their family has adopted i many dogs over the years including a cattle dog named Zazu, who proved to be a champion in the sport. Along the way, Wehrli began collecting championship K-9 Frisbee memorabilia and now maintains a K-9 Frisbee Museum in the basement of his Naperville home.
